I can’t believe I’m actually writing this, but the builders have finally started the renovations on our home! If you’ve read any of my previous home posts, you’ll know that we’ve faced a lot of delays and false starts, so this really is exciting progress.
After the previous disappointments I didn’t let myself believe it was really going to happen until the builders (and their portaloo) arrived on Wednesday morning. Admittedly they didn’t get off to the best start due to the snow, but that couldn’t be helped. Seriously what is with all this snow?!?
They’ve started at the front of the house, removing the wall and levelling the garden to make room for both cars on the drive. The only sign of what is to come at the back is a yellow line painted on the ground, marking the boundaries of the new extension.
It’s started to all feel very real now and it will soon be time to make some decisions about how we are going to use this new space. It’s nearly time to think about the finer details, such as the kitchen, windows and doors and soft furnishings too. In the upcoming weeks you’ll find us pushing the new pram around some kitchen showrooms I’m sure.
The extension will open out onto the garden and I’m excited to have a back door again (our current one is blocked by the dishwasher in our tiny kitchen, because you know, priorities…). It will certainly make bringing the pram in easier too, at the moment I have three stone steps and a half door to content with. I particularly like these aluminium bifold doors to open the space right up and really make the most of the garden too.
We’re thinking of using some of the room as a comfy seating area to enable the new room to be really family friendly and a social space where we can all be together.
I’m finding it hard to imagine how it will all come together but once the foundations are in I’m sure I’ll have a better feel for how our new space will look. Although it will be super exciting to chose all of the finishing touches to make it just how we want it, the indecisive part of me is also a little nervous too!.
I’m feeling much less daunted by the building work itself than I expected to though. It’s certainly not ideal with a new baby, but we’ve discovered that a newborn brings their own kind of chaos, so at the moment we’re just embracing it!.
If anyone has had an extension I’d love to see how you styled it, if you have any posts about it please link them for me to have a read (probably during the night feeds!).
Thanks for popping by,
