16 Week Pregnancy Update

Today I turned 16 weeks pregnant! I am feeling slightly better than in my First Trimester and am going to update on the past two weeks, the start of the second trimester.


Baby is the size of a pickle or an avocado and has doubled in weight over the last couple of weeks. They can now hear my heartbeat and voice and detect light shone through my belly! Baby has developed more reflexes and makes lots of facial expressions too.


I’m no longer being sick every day but now only every 2-3 days which is more manageable. I don’t seem to be quite so sensitive to smells and have even braved the fridge! I’m still getting a couple of awful headaches a week and I’m still pretty tired. I definitely have a little more energy than a few weeks ago though, although I’m not back to my normal self just yet. Its the last week of the summer term now and I’m not sure how much is pregnancy tired and how much is end of year teacher tired! I’m hoping to feel less sleepy and more full of beans for the 6 weeks holidays.

For the past couple of days I’ve had really achey hips which is worrying me a little. I got up one night and had to literally limp to the toilet. I’ve been sleeping with a pillow between my legs which seems to be helping a little. Surely its way too early for my hips to be sore?!?

There’s been the odd pulsing feeling in my tummy from time to time and I’m wondering if these might be very early movements. I guess I’ll have more idea as they get stronger.

Diet, Exercise and Weight Gain

My diet hasn’t changed much in the past couple of weeks and I’ve put on a couple of lbs since my last update. I have some days where I feel I can eat normally again and others where I only fancy plain carby meals. Oh and ice lollies! Something I love one week I cant bear the thought of the next, which can be a little frustrating.

I have been swimming 30 lengths twice a week for about 4 weeks now and am loving it. As I mentioned above though my hips are feeling quite achey and after a quick Google I’m not sure breast stroke is doing me any favours. It would be a real shame if I had to stop swimming though as its the only exercise I’m managing to do at the moment. I do plan on walking more over the summer and trying some second trimester workouts and pregnancy yoga too.

Bump and Clothes

On the evening of being 14+6 I seemed to have popped and although I want sure if it was baby or pizza the next morning the bump was still there and has been ever since. I wore a slightly more fitted top one day last week and lots of colleagues commented on my bump. Its nice to actually be looking pregnant now and not just puffy or fat! Please excuse the poor quality late night iPhone photo!

I have invested in some maternity jeans as well as some maternity work trousers and oh my goodness they are the dream! I don’t see how anyone ever goes back to wearing normal clothes ever again?!?

How I’m Feeling

Very tired and stressed and oh so ready for the school holidays! Some days I don’t have time to even think about being pregnant as the last weeks of term are so hectic.

I’m feeling very looked after by my friends at work as they’re always asking how I am. I told my class I was having a baby too and they were super exciting. The asked lots of lovely questions and have been listening to my tummy and drawing things for the baby!


I met my new midwife at my 15 week appointment and got to hear baby’s heartbeat for the first time which was so lovely. She told me that baby is rhesus positive so I will need the anti-D injection at 28 weeks. All other blood tests came back fine and my blood pressure was good too.

I’m going to update every two weeks and by next time I’m really hoping to be able to report some teeny tiny baby kicks!
