18 Week Pregnancy Update

Today I turned 18 weeks pregnant! I’m really appreciating the change of pace that has come with the summer holidays and I’m going to update on the past two weeks.


Baby is the size of a pomegranate and can now swallow and yawn. Its looking like a real miniature human and is even growing eyelashes.

One day it felt like my tummy was being tickled from the inside with a feather then this week I’ve felt a few odd sensations so I’m wondering if these are early baby kicks? My sister is a student midwife and managed to hear the baby using her pinard, Tom also got to have a listen which was really lovely as he wasn’t at my last midwife appointment when I heard it for the first time.


I’m down to just being sick just once or twice a week and the headaches seem to be the same too. I’m feeling slightly less tired and the summer holidays are definitely helping I’m sure. The worst thing over the past couple of weeks has been pelvic pain (I thought it was my hips hurting but the doctor says its my pelvis!). I’m now waiting for a physio appointment. The pain is worse at night and seems to be affected by how active I am during the day.

Diet, Exercise and Weight Gain

I’m eating much more like my normal self now which is good, although the holidays have meant quite a lot of eating out! My total pregnancy weight gain is around 4lbs, which at 18 weeks I’m pretty happy with. I’m still swimming on and off and have been doing a lot more walking now I’m not at work.

Bump and Clothes

I’m pretty much solely in maternity clothes now, or things I had which were slightly big. At the moment I’m loving just having a small capsule wardrobe and it makes me want to sort out all of my pre-pregnancy clothes so I don’t have so many! I’m sure the novelty of wearing the same things over and over will wear off eventually though. The lack of summer weather is making me slightly regret the two pairs of maternity shorts I bought, will I ever get to wear them?!? You can see my Maternity Wardrobe Wishlist here.

My bump looks pretty huge to me from above but from the side I think I could still just pass for someone who has eaten a little too much. I do feel like its grown slightly over the last couple of days.

How I’m Feeling

I’m ranging from being really excited about our new arrival to really nervous about the 20 week scan in a couple of weeks. I sometimes feel I cant talk about the baby to anyone or get too excited until I know everything is ok. I’m so looking forward to stronger baby kicks so I’ll have a way to know everything is alright in there on a daily basis without having to wait for the next appointment!


I haven’t had any more midwife appointments this fortnight but I did go to see a doctor about my hip (sorry pelvis!) pain and he referred me for physio. I should have an appointment within the next couple of weeks.

I’ll be updating again at 20 weeks, which will be the day before my 20 week scan!
