So you just got married, the confetti has settled and you’re ready to start using your new name, but where do you start?
Read on to find out where you should change your name and how to go about it.
Lets start with the easiest change! Log into your account, click on the down arrow at the top right hand corner then select settings. This will bring you to the General Account Settings where you can edit your name. You can only change your name on Facebook every 60 days so make sure you spell your new surname correctly!
If like me you’re changing your name in the airport, waiting for your honeymoon flight, and only have your phone, you can change your name using the app too. Click in the three horizontal lines in the bottom right hand corner then scroll down to settings then general.
Banks – including savings accounts, mortgage provider and credit cards
The next place I changed my name was at my banks. This was very straight forward, I just popped into the branch with my bank card and marriage certificate and they did the rest.
I’ll admit to not having done this yet, because you need your marriage certifacate to be send away for up to 6 weeks, and as we only requested one copy, we’ve needed it for other things in the mean time. The process is pretty simple and is free. You need to complete a D1 form (D2 if you drive a lorry, minibus or bus) which you can request here then send the completed form with your marriage certificate and driving licence to the DVLA.
If you own your own car you’ll need to change your V5C too by filling in section 6 of your log book and sending the whole thing to the DVLA.
Another change I haven’t made yet, as I’m waiting for my passport to expire and you have to pay £72.50 for a new passport if you want to change your name. We booked our honeymoon in my maiden name and as long as the name on your ticket matched the name on your passport you’re fine to travel. I have heard of people booking their honeymoon in their married name then taking their marriage certificate too, but I haven’t done this myself.
You can change the name on your passport online here. You will need to then send them two new photos, which will only need countersigning if your appearance has changed since your last photos. You will also need to send them your marriage certificate.
If you really want to use your new name on your passport sooner, you can apply for your passport up to three month before you get married, but you wont be able to use it until the day of your ceremony. You will need a signature from the person conducting your ceremony and to fill in the form for newly weds which you can download here
Doctor and Dentist
Just asked to see the marriage certificate at the surgery reception, easy.
I don’t know if anyone else still uses their local library, but if you do, they’ll probably ask to see you marriage certificate too. I forgot mine and lost my library card, but I talked them into changing it and issuing a new card anyway!
My work need to take a copy of my marriage licence to keep paying me, make sure you find out what your work needs you to do!

Professional Bodies or Unions
These will all have their own forms to fill in, so don’t forget to get in touch with them.
Just give them a call, this will usually incur an administration fee.
I think that’s everything, I hope you’ve found it helpful.
Comment below if you think there’s anything I’ve missed and feel free to share this post with any newly married friends!
Thanks for popping by,
